Your passion for art was amazing, I’ll never get over the tea trollies, knives and forks being arranged into florals displays, mad jeans running down a hill and the millions of buttons being placed into jars. I never look at mirrors and wine bottles the same way.
I enjoyed our playful exchange of words, you would always give me that look ‘are you being serious?’ and we would both laugh!

Heartbroken to hear of the passing of my dear friend Alfreda McHale. Such a wonderfully creative, funny, and kind soul. I feel so lucky to have shared laughter and inspiration with you. You’ll be missed more than words can say.

I’m so sad to hear of Alfreda’s passing. I will always remember the love and laughter that was shared around the kitchen tables in Leamington and Ireland. The fun, laughter, music, lovely food, red wine, and good times will never be forgotten. I’ll treasure the beautiful blanket she made me, and the memories of our horse-and-cart adventures. I’m sending all of the family so much love. You are all firmly in my thoughts. All my love, Claire x

So sad to hear of Alfreda’s passing. Memories flood back from the last five decades: from before we were neighbours up to my last visit from home here in France three years ago. Alfreda was warm, expressive, unbuttoned, well informed and nobody’s fool: robust exchanges had foundations of mutual respect and would invariably end in laughter and hugs. Her late flowering as an artist was wonderful to observe. So many of her friends and acquaintances were mine also; too many have died, especially very recently. I extend my heartfelt condolences to Pat, such a loving and gentle and devoted husband, and to the entire family, both McCanns and Brittons. Would that I were able to be in Leamington for the funeral, but sadly it cannot be. Cathy has been informed and would like to join me in sending love and “bon courage”.

I’m grateful for the kindnesses when Alfreda helped to look after me and my brothers when Helen was sick and in hospital. As a child it was comforting to know her warm heart, tenderness and care.

My funniest recollection of Alfreda however was when I came with my family to France to attend Kate’s and Joel’s wedding. We were all canoeing hopelessly down the river, when suddenly there appeared a tourist steamboat heading in our direction. We’d had a long and adventurous journey getting there by car and hadn’t met any relatives up to that point, when seemingly out of nowhere, I hear a booming, charismatic voice calling out my unusual name in loudest mode: “THELONIOUS!!”. Bewildered, and wondering if I was encountering a divine appointment or imagining things, I turned to see Alfreda waving and smiling and trying to converse with us from the boat!

It is a long time since we last met, Alfreda, over 30 years I a regret to say. But nevertheless my brother, John, and I have never forgotten the deep friendship you had with our mother from your days together at Cay Block and long thereafter. The care you showed her when she pased away in 1996 has remained with us ever since. We cannot thank you enough. Requiescat in pace.
